The Umbrella Project by Rhona Byrne, commissioned by Fire Station Artists’ Studios and supported by Dublin City Council
The Arts Council and local government (through the County and City Management Association – CCMA) are commissioning an independent, strategic review of the network of venues and arts centres across the country.
The review will focus on the infrastructure of professionally-managed arts buildings that are open to the public throughout the year, and will be used to help develop a coordinated, spatially-informed strategy to support and develop the built infrastructure for the arts.
This has come about as a result of the agreement signed in 2016 between the Arts Council and local government, A Framework for Collaboration (PDF, 1.5 MB) and the review is a part of the goals of this agreement.
A consultation phase has been incorporated into the study and all stakeholders will have the opportunity to participate.
Award for tender
The successful tenderer for the Venues Review is CHL Consultants and they will begin work before the end of the year. A short edited extract of the invitation to tender is available here (MS Word, 36.5KB)
For further information please see a press release about the venues review in our news section.
Consultation and communication
A group of venues representing a cross section of the many types of venues in operation has been chosen to give the review an in-depth understanding of the current infrastructure. The participating venues are listed here (MS Word, 14 KB). The Arts Council has supplied recent applications and assessments of those applications, along with ‘Venues Context Notes’ (the introductory note produced annually to accompany recommendations to Council and provide a context for those recommendations).
The artistic policies and strategies of the local authorities in which their venues are located are being researched at the same time. In addition, a group of experienced personnel with particular (and differing) perspectives on the overall infrastructure will meet with the consultants as a means of informing them and proposing strategic overviews. The personnel involved will be published here when this meeting has taken place.
A survey has taken place, in which all venues were invited to participate.
CHL invited Directors of Services and Arts Officers to meet with them in February 2018, attendees are listed here (MS Word, 17 KB).
