The Arts Council sends its warmest congratulations to all of the winners of the An Post Irish Book Awards.
The Arts Council is delighted at the news that Sinéad Gleeson won the Bookselling Ireland Non-Fiction Book of the Year for her essay collection, Constellations. Sinéad received an Arts Council Literature Bursary in 2016 to assist her in completing the collection; earlier this year, she was the Arts Council/UCD Writer in Residence.
The Arts Council also congratulates publisher Leabhair Comhair and author Proinsias Mac a' Bhaird on the novel Tairngreacht, which was awarded Love Leabhar Gaeilge Irish Language Book of the Year. Leabhair Comhar is funded by the Arts Council through Arts Grant Funding.
The Arts Council is delighted that Sarah Maria Griffin was awarded Dept 51 @ Eason Teen and Young Adult Book of the Year for her novel Other Words for Smoke. Sarah was awarded an Arts Council bursary in 2018.
Congratulations are also extended to Irish publishers The O’Brien Press and Little Island. Shooting for the Stars Written by Dr. Norah Patten, Illustrated by Jennifer Farley was published by O’Brien Press. 123 Ireland by Aoife Dooley was published by Little Island and was awarded the Specsavers Children’s Book of the Year Awards Junior Award. The O’Brien Press is funded through the Arts Council’s Arts Grant Funding programme, and Little Island is a Strategically Funded organisation.
The Arts Council is delighted to see Nicole Flattery win the Writing.ie Short Story of the Year Award; Nicole is a recipient of an Arts Council bursary in 2016 and a Next Generation Artist Award in 2017. Her story was published in the Stinging Fly magazine, which is funded by the Arts Council through the Strategic Funding programme.
Colm Tóibín was awarded the 2019 Bob Hughes Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Arts Council is immensely pleased to see the writer honoured in this way. Colm is a former member of the Arts Council and a member of Aosdána.
Finally, the Arts Council extends its congratulations to Joseph O’Connor on receiving the Eason Novel of the Year. Joseph O’Connor is a member of Aosdána.
