The Arts Council has expressed its regret at the passing of Francis Harvey.
Speaking today, Sheila Pratschke, Chair of the Arts Council said, “Francis Harvey was a profound and gifted poet, with an intensely individual voice which shone light on unmapped parts of the landscape, both physical and emotional. Undoubtedly, his poetry will continue to be read for generations and our deepest sympathies are with his friends and family.”
Francis was born in Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh on April 13, 1925. His mother was from Ballyshannon, Co Donegal and her father was a native of Enniskillen. His father died when Francis was six and the family moved to Ballyshannon.
Francis Harvey got a job in the bank and moved in various branches, mostly in Co Donegal, until he took early retirement in 1979. During his years in the bank he began to write – at first plays and short stories and then poetry. He has lived in Co Donegal for the past sixty years.
Stories and poems have appeared in leading literary magazines here and abroad and Collected Poems was published by Dedalus in 2007
