The Arts Council has expressed its sadness at the passing of musician Joe Burke.
Joe Burke is recognized as one of the greatest exponents of traditional Irish Music. His creative brilliance, his knowledge and love of his land, its music and culture earned him an immortal place in the history of Irish music and folklore. Joe played amongst the greats of traditional music – John Doherty, Margaret Barry and Johnny O’Leary to name a few. His technical virtuosity was unique, but that was just part of his great artistry. He traced the sources and melodic forms of Irish Music back to the rhythms and cadences of Irish speech and language, and felt that they had an intimate relationship with each other. To him the music was expressive and emotional, evoking the Irish countryside and the varying humour of the people.”
