The Arts Council has expressed its sadness at the passing of Aosdána member Louis Stewart who has passed away.
Sheila Pratschke, Chair of the Arts Council said "The Council is very sorry to learn of the death of Louis Stewart. He was both an ambassador for irish jazz, and an inspiration to younger generations of irish guitarists and other jazz musicians who followed him. He will be greatly missed."
Living in Dublin, Louis Stewart was widely ecognised as one of the world's greatest mainstream jazz guitarists, and was the first irish jazz musician to develop a major international reputation.
A composer as well as a performer, he was the first jazz musician to be made a member of Aosdana, and also received an honorary doctorate from TCD.
