The Arts Council has expressed its regret at the passing of Ms Mairéad Furlong, who was a member of the Council from 1984 – 1988.
Mairead was a long-time supporter of the visual arts throughout the country and was an active member of the Council from 1984 until 1988. She founded The Friends of the County Wexford Art Collection in 2009.
She was born in Dublin and was educated at the Holy Faith Convent in Clontarf. For many years, Mairead worked in dairy farming in Wexford and subsequently commenced an antiques business in 1973. Mairéad had undertaken extensive studies in the area of art history and landscape painting and was awarded a Diploma in the History of European painting from University College Dublin. She was a lecturer in art and a specialist on Caravagio painting in Trinity College.
Our thoughts are with her husband Nicky, sister Muriel and all her extended family. May she rest in peace.
