The Trinity College Writer's Fellowship is a joint initiative of Trinity's School of English and the Arts Council of Ireland. The fellowship was established in 1986 and since then it has been co-funded by the School of English and the Arts Council of Ireland. Many well-known writers have held the Fellowship including: John McGahern (1988), Paul Durcan (1990), Sebastian Barry (1995-1996), Marina Carr (1998-99). The holder for 2019 was Mary O'Malley.
The Fellowship is tenable at Trinity College for the period of 13th of January 2020 to 29th May 2020. For the Hilary teaching term (January-May), the Fellow runs a weekly 2-hour writing workshop for students on the Trinity M.Phil. in Creative Writing. The Fellow is expected to be available for a limited number of hours per week for consultation by students on this course. The Fellow also runs a workshop, usually meeting one hour a week, during Hilary teaching term for College undergraduates. The Fellow decides how many students to take onto the workshop, and selects them through submitted portfolios. In April and May, the Fellow runs a workshop for the general public; again the make-up of this is determined by the Fellow.
