The Arts Council today published its new strategy, Making Great Art Work, setting out its plan for leading the development of the arts in Ireland over the next decade, prioritising the artist and public engagement, and outlining a range of actions which the agency will take to deliver on its vision.
The Council reaffirmed its commitment to excellence, freedom of expression and diversity in the context of a changing Ireland and said it would lead as the expert body in the arts through its advocacy, expert advice, investment and strategic partnerships.
Arts Council Chair Sheila Pratschke said: “Change and renewal are the focus of this strategy. We will work with our partners to achieve change in the arts sector and beyond but we know that the change must begin with ourselves: with what we choose to do and how we choose to do it.”
Arts Council Director Orlaith McBride said: “We intend, over the next decade and through this strategy, that the centrality of the arts to Irish life will have been strengthened -- by our advocacy, by our support of artists throughout their careers, by the involvement of many agencies in cultural provision, by the impact of the arts on the creative economy, and by the depth and breadth of people’s engagement with the arts.”
The 10-year strategy will be implemented through three-year planning cycles, including funding agreements with arts organisations.
To support its publication, and to inform the preparation of the first three-year implementation plan (2017-2019), the Council will host a series of meetings and workshops with stakeholders as well as invite responses through an online forum. Scheduled for October and November, details of this engagement process will be announced in the coming weeks.
