The Arts Council has expressed its regret at the death of the visual artist and Aosdána member Sonja Landweer.
Arts Council Chair Prof. Kevin Rafter, said: "Sonja Landweer made an indelible contribution to the visual arts in Ireland during her prolific and vibrant career spanning almost of six decades of practice. She will be deeply missed.”
Born in Amsterdam in 1933, Sonja Landweer studied at the Amsterdam School of Industrial Design (now Rietveld Academy). She evolved a batiked-ceramic technique in the early 1960s.
Moving to Ireland in the early 1960s to join the fledgling Kilkenny Design Workshop Sonja was part of a pioneering generation of artists who contributed so much to the revitalisation of visual arts, craft and design traditions in this country. Utilising a diversity of materials and mediums throughout her work Landweer sought to reflect and evoke the beauty and complexity of the natural world. Similarly she was an influential force in encouraging the blurring of barriers across art forms toward fostering shared appreciation between artists and makers of all kinds.

Sonja won numerous awards, including the Verzetsprijs in Holland (1964), the Prix Artistique, Biennale Internationale de Ceramique d’Art, Villauris, France (1974) and the 1992 honorary award from NCAD. Honorary Mention, Critics Acclaim, World Triennal of Small Ceramics, Zagreb (1993).
Her ceramics had been widely exhibited in Ireland and abroad. Her jewellery can regularly be seen at DesignYard, Dublin and the Pepper Cannister Gallery Dublin. Her work is represented in many private and public collections throughout the world including the Arts Council Collection.
