John O’Donnell is a writer and a Senior Counsel who lives and works in Dublin.
He has lengthy and extensive experience of serving at board level on a variety of arts organisations. He was a Member of the Council of the Dublin Theatre Festival from 1991 until 2001. He became a Member - and later Chairman - of Rough Magic Theatre Company, on the Board of which he served as a Member from 2001 until 2011. In addition he was a Member of the Cultural Relations Committee (now Culture Ireland) from 1999 until 2004. He has also served as a Member of the Board of Poetry Ireland from 2005 until 2011.
His work has been published and broadcast widely in Ireland and abroad. Awards for poetry include the Irish National Poetry Prize, the Hennessy/Sunday Tribune Poetry Award and the Ireland Funds Prize. He has contributed to various anthologies of poetry and prose. He has published two collections of poetry, Some Other Country and Icarus Sees His Father Fly.
