New funding programmes

Over the three years 2006, 2007 and 2008, we will establish - on a phased basis - new funding programmes to support artists and arts organisations across the spectrum of music practice (genres, styles, scales and settings) and across those serving a diversity of audiences. As these programmes are introduced, we will invite you to come and talk to us about your ideas, about how our funding programmes might support you, and about how you can, inturn, help in achieving these goals.

Who should read this?

You are a performer or a composer who requires time to reflect or create work or who wishes to undertake career development opportunities, including continued professional development, mentoring, master classes and workshops.

You have plans for a new small- or medium scale ensemble.

You lead or are a member of an existing ensemble, with plans to strengthen and develop existing work.

You work in or with a resource organisation that supports music, and:

  • plays a distinctive role in providing core supports to the practice and enjoyment of music, across all areas of musical practice;
  • is concerned with improving the availability of information on careerdevelopment opportunities for performers and composers.

You wish to commission a piece of music.

You work in or with a festival or a venue that presents music and that:

  • contributes to the range of music performances available;
  • offers consistent high-quality music programming; o contributes to developing and sustaining audiences for music;
  • could contribute to an improved profile ofmusic programming in non-specialist venues and festivals.

You have ideas for a music project, particularly:

  • a music recording or publishing project;
  • new ensemble-in-residence projects, especially those in partnership with local authorities and others where appropriate.

You have proposals for touring music that will provide more venues with a wider range of high-quality music, increase employment opportunities for music professionals and serve a wider audience.

Initiatives

Over the next three years - 2006, 2007 and 2008 - we will take initiatives in music, based on working closely with individuals and organisations with ideas and achievements in these areas. These initiatives will be introduced on a phased basis. As we make progress, we will invite you to discuss with us ways in which you might assist us to:

  • Identify national policy and infrastructural gaps affecting music and take a lead informulating responses in partnership with organisations and voices from all areas of musical practice;
  • Develop the environment for contemporarymusic in response to the findings of the Contemporary Music Review;
  • Examine national orchestral needs and develop appropriate responses.
  • Investigate issues including regional spread of orchestralactivity and the feasibility of an opera/ballet/music theatre orchestra;
  • Analyse the musical strengths and needs of Ireland’s new communities;
  • Develop a national showcase or music fair to assist in the professional promotion of Irish music nationally and internationally;
  • Establish the feasibility of a national music day, with partner organisations;
  • Support local authorities and others in the development of their music programmes and in the provision of a community-wide range of activities.

Advocacy

Over the next three years, we will be seeking partners to work with us in advocating for:

  • The full implementation of the study, A National System of Local Music Education Services;
  • A dedicated medium-scale concert venue in Dublin.
