Deis

Deis Evaluation

The Arts Council is pleased to announce its selection of Arts Projects Ireland led by Margaret O’Sullivan and Trish Murphy to conduct an evaluation of the Deis scheme.

The research, commissioned by the Arts Council, will will document the current context for and operation of the Deis scheme; measure the level and range of application to, and funding awarded by the scheme; assess the impact of the scheme on traditional arts; and identify issues for the future of the scheme in continued support of traditional arts.

Deis was established under the Arts Council’s Traditional Arts Initiative 2005-2008. Deis which commenced in September 2005 is a proposal-based scheme aimed at facilitating traditional artists and encouraging them engage in a wider range of projects.

The purpose of the Deis scheme is to provide support for traditional arts projects, or projects involving collaboration between the traditional arts and other artforms, that are in line with the Arts Council’s policy on the traditional arts. The scheme supports one-off or short-term projects only. Deis operates on an ongoing basis and proposals are accepted year round.

Deis is open to individuals, groups and organisations whose projects do not fall under other Arts Council funding programmes. There is no upper or lower limit to the amount that may be requested. Projects of any nature may be proposed once they are in line with the Arts Council’s policy on the traditional arts.
Since its introduction in 2005 Deis has funded over 220 individual projects to the value of over €1.5 million.

The evaluation findings will provide guidance regarding the future of the scheme, as well as informing practical measures to support traditional arts in Ireland.

The research is due to report to the Arts Council in late July 2008
