79 festivals and events benefit from Arts Council support
Festival goers, tourists and businesses around Ireland will benefit this year from further support by the Arts Council to bring the best in entertainment and the arts to festivals across the country.
A total of €333,959 has been awarded to 79 festivals and events throughout the country. A total of 182 applications were received. The total value of the funding sought by the 182 applicants was €1,493,005.
This particular funding was made through round two of the Festivals and Events scheme 2013. The Festivals and Events Scheme is aimed at locally-based events which might otherwise find it difficult to take place without the support.
Support is going to a variety of festivals around the country that will celebrate a broad range of artistic platforms and genres. Festivals benefitting from Arts Council support include Kerry Film Festival, Westport Arts Festival, East Cork Early Music Festival, Gaze Film Festival Dublin, Sligo Festival of Baroque, Waterford Arts Festival and Clare Traditional Music Festival, amongst others.
The Arts Council’s scheme helps annual favourites to take place such as Galway Jazz Festival, which is unique in Ireland and the Cork Folk Festival which this year has put out a special call to emigrant singers and songwriters to come home as part of the Gathering.
Speaking after the announcement today, Orlaith McBride, Director of the Arts Council, said: "I am delighted that the Arts Council is able to support these very important festivals around the country. The arts play a vital role in our economy, especially in local job creation, driving economic activity for local businesses and for local tourism. When Ireland doesn’t have the weather in a summer, many good memories are created for tourists, for families and for young people through these hugely important local events."
"Despite funding for the arts being cut by 30% since 2008, we see it as vital that support for the arts is maintained within limited resources as far as is possible."
"The range and ambition of the festivals funded under the Arts Council’s Festivals and Events Scheme demonstrates how central the arts are in all our lives and the exciting talents that are in Ireland: from an array of traditional and multi-disciplinary arts festivals around the country to niche events in film, literature and circus, there will be something for everyone to enjoy in the months and years ahead."
