31 October 2012: Four films to be made to mark Arts Council anniversary

The Arts Council will mark its 60th anniversary with a series of exhibitions titled Into the Light: The Arts Council - 60 Years of Supporting the Arts. The exhibitions will run concurrently in four partner venues throughout the country from December 2012. The partner venues are: Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane, Dublin; Limerick City Gallery of Art; Crawford Art Gallery; The Model, Sligo.

To mark this special occasion, the Arts Council and RTÉ are supporting the making of four short films which respond creatively to the Arts Council collection and which will be broadcast in RTÉ Television’s weekly arts series, The Works, at the end of November 2012. Following a competitive process, the four films to be made are:

  • Variations on a Collection
An overview of the Arts Council collection and how it reflects who we are, by James Kelly
  • The Nettle Coat
Exploring the public's response to Alice Maher's Nettle Coat, by Pat Collins and Sharon Whooley
  • Reframe
Following the artist Karl Burke during the development of his new work commissioned for the exhibition at Dublin City Gallery, The Hugh Lane, by Tadhg O'Sullivan
  • A Prevailing Wind
Celebrating six decades of the arts, by Ian Cudmore, Alan Kavanagh and Donal Dineen.

Speaking today, Orlaith McBride, Director of the Arts Council, said "We are delighted to be offering this unique initiative in partnership with RTÉ.  These four films will bring the art from the Arts Council's Into the Light exhibitions into the homes of audiences throughout Ireland through their broadcast within The Works on RTÉ Television. We would like to congratulate the film makers on their selection and look forward to seeing their responses to the exhibitions in November."

Aifric Ní Chianáin, Series Producer of The Works said: "RTÉ is delighted to collaborate with the Arts Council to commission and showcase new work by four innovative Irish film-makers. This is a big milestone for the Arts Council and this collaboration, we feel, is a creative and inclusive way to mark that milestone, as well as an exciting opportunity for film makers. We look forward very much to premiering these short films on The Works in November."
