As part of the Culture Night celebrations the Arts Council will open its doors on Friday 21 September from 5.30 pm until 9.00 pm to showcase work from its collection. A special focus this year will be on two works by the artist Patrick Scott, who was elected as a Saoi of Aosdana in July 2007.
The first piece Gold Painting 18, mixed media on canvas was purchased by the Arts Council in 1965.The second piece Meditation, mixed media on canvas was purchased almost 50 years later in 2012.
Both of these pieces are a significant element of Into the Light: The Arts Council - 60 Years of Supporting the Arts, an initiative which involves an extensive recall of the Arts Council collection which is currently out on loan to public institutions. The collection is one example of the support given to artists by the Arts Council since its foundation.
Into the Light:The Arts Council: - 60 Years of Supporting the Arts is a partnership between the Arts Council and a range of regional venues. The venues will have the creative freedom to choose their own works from the collection, which will give each exhibition a unique theme and feel.
The exhibitions will take place in the following galleries in November and December 2012:
. Crawford Art Gallery, Cork
. Limerick City Gallery, Limerick
. The Model, Sligo
. Dublin City Gallery, The Hugh Lane, Dublin
By bringing the work of great Irish artists to the Irish people, we can help Ireland realise its creative potential and foster artistic inclusion in communities across the country. Our intention is to bring the work of Ireland's visual artists ‘into the light’ as President Higgins has urged. These exhibitions showcase many of the cultural and artistic riches that our country has produced over the lifespan of the Arts Council.
