12 June 2007: Arts Council announces recipients of Curated Visual Arts Award

The Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaion and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland are delighted to announce that the recipients of the Curated Visual Arts Award are, Brendan Earley, Bea McMahon, Conor McFeely and Factotum.

The Curated Visual Arts Award is an initiative of the North/South Committee of the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaion and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, in partnership with Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin and Void, Derry and is designed to offer the selected artists the chance to produce pivotal work that will advance their own practice. A major feature of the award is the opportunity for the artists to exhibit their work in both the Douglas Hyde and Void galleries, beginning at the end of the year.

Speaking today, Mike Nelson, the guest curator said, “I was delighted with the great response to the Award. The submissions represented a range of practices and included artists at very differing stages in their work. I am glad to say that my enthusiasm in opening up the Award to four artists has been supported by the Arts Councils and the galleries. I am thrilled that Brendan, Bea, Conor and Factotum share my belief in the potential of the Award.”

Mary Cloake, Director of the Arts Council said,”This Award was always about creating an exceptional opportunity for artists. The participation of a significant curatorial figure was core to its inception. As an artist, Mike Nelson’s close attention to the purpose of the award and his insight has been invaluable.”

Congratulating the successful artists, Roisín McDonough, Chief Executive of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland said, “Through this new jointly funded award, we recognise artists from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland who have reached key times in their careers when they will benefit greatly from the chance to spend six months developing an ambitious art project. Our support will help them to produce new work of lasting value and to take their artistic careers to new levels.”
