29 August 2012: Arts Council congratulates Grafton Architects on winning the Silver Lion Award

The Arts Council congratulates Grafton Architects (Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara) on winning the Silver Lion Award for Promising Practice at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2012. The announcement was made this morning by the overall Curator, David Chipperfield, at the Awards Ceremony in Venice. The Venice Biennele is largely accepted as the most important architecture exhibition in the world.

Grafton Architects were invited by David Chipperfield to take part in the main curated exhibition, Common Ground. The exhibition consisted of 119 invited participants from all over the world. Grafton Architects presentation is based on their insight into the work of Paulo Mendes da Rocha and how this is reflected in the development of their recently won university building in Lima, Peru. The architects also worked in collaboration with Irish artist, Eileen McDonagh.

Orlaith McBride Director of the Arts Council said: "This Award to Grafton Architects reflects the esteem Irish architecture is currently held in internationally. The exhibition itself places the practice's own work, particularly the university in Lima, within the context of another international practitioner's work, marrying an expansive, international perspective with a sensitivity to place and locale which is delivered beautifully".

Grafton Architects are one of five architectural practices exhibiting at this year's biennale, which includes Ireland's national representation of the work of heneghan peng architects.

Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara are both members of Aosdána.

The 13th International Architecture Biennale takes place in Venice from 29th August - 25th November 2012.
