08 June 2010: Arts Council announces €1million touring fund

People right across the country can expect to experience world class plays, concerts, performances and exhibitions in the months ahead under a special touring scheme, the Arts Council has said.

Announcing grants of over €1 million specifically for touring and dissemination, the Arts Council said that the funding would enable 44 individual artists and organisations to take their shows on the road to all corners of Ireland. The scheme follows the success of the Arts Council's 'Touring Experiment' in 2007 and 2008 and is designed to encourage arts organisations to take their best shows to audiences in every county.

Druid Theatre Company will perform Seán O’Casey’s The Silver Tassie in a production that involves participation from local children in the communities where they perform. Pan Pan Theatre Company will take Oedipus Loves You based on and inspired by the Oedipus the King plays of Seneca and Sophocles and the writings of Sigmund Freud on a nationwide tour.

In music, one of the finest choirs in the world, The State Choir Latvija will travel the length and breadth of the country under the baton of Irish conductor Fergus Sheil.  Galway man Aindrias De Staic will be travelling the highways and byways with his rich and rare style of fiddle playing and storytelling.

Speaking about the scheme, Pat Moylan, Chairman of the Arts Council said, "We know from research that people all across Ireland are eager to see high quality work, and we are very happy to enable that work with these grants. The arts also play a vital role in the local economy, creating local jobs and attracting tourists with great performances and exhibitions in so many local centres."
