The Chairman of the Arts Council, Pat Moylan has sent her congratulations to the Irish artists whose work was today nominated for Academy Awards, and wished them the best of luck on Oscar night.
She said she was delighted that Martin McDonagh had been nominated for Best Original Screenplay for his feature film In Bruges, and also for Roddy Doyle, whose story New Boy has been made into a film by Steph Green and is a contender for the Best Live Action Short award.
"The nomination of two Irish writers for such prestigious international honours shows once again the high esteem in which Irish artists are held around the world.
"Such recognition is a tribute to our creative, vibrant and innovative society, and everyone in Ireland can be proud today of the role that public investment in the arts plays in nurturing this," she added.
Ms Moylan also congratulated Irish producer Redmond Morris, one of four producers of The Reader, a contender for Best Picture, and production designer Nathan Crowley, who was nominated for his work on The Dark Knight.
