29 September 2008: Arts Council regrets the passing of mezzo-soprano Bernadette Greevy

The Arts Council has expressed its regret at the passing of mezzo-soprano Bernadette Greevy who died on Friday last.

Speaking today, Mary Cloake, Director of the Arts Council, said, "The Arts Council is deeply saddened at the passing of Bernadette Greevy who was one of Ireland’s truly celebrated international artists, universally admired as a concert performer and recognised as being one of the finest mezzo-sopranos of her time. She was particularly renowned as an interpreter of Mahler and her many recordings include Mahler’s Rückert Lieder and Kindertotenlieder with the National Symphony Orchestra. She will also be remembered for her contribution to the operatic life of this country, and in particular, the development of young Irish singers through the annual masterclass series she held in Dublin for over twenty years. We offer our sympathy to her family and friends."
