The Arts Council is deeply saddened by the passing of former Council member Charles Hennessy, who was a member of the Arts Council from 1988 - 1993.
In addition to his term on the Council, Mr. Hennessy also distinguished himself on the Board of a number of other artistic institutions. He was the Chairman of the Cork International Film Festival, a Board member of the Cork Opera House, a Board member of the Irish Film Centre, and the Chair of the National College of Art and Design. He was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws, by University College Cork in 2003.
Speaking today, Mary Cloake, Director of the Arts Council said, "Charles Hennessy was a tireless activist and advocate for the arts whose infectious enthusiasm and sound counsel contributed immeasurably to the decision-making of the Arts Council when he was a member. He will be much missed especially in Cork where so many organisations had the benefit of his wisdom and of his generous spirit".
