The Arts Council congratulates Aosdána member George Morrison on receiving an Industry Lifetime Contribution Award from the Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA).

The award presented by President Mary McAleese acknowledges George Morrison’s achievements as a documentary filmmaker and archivist. Speaking about the award Toby Dennett, Registrar of Aosdána stated "George Morrison is one of Ireland most influential film makers and is fully deserving of this award". Morrison is best known for his work during the 50s and 60s, his most memorable works being the ground-breaking documentaries ‘Mise Eire’ and ‘Saoirse’ which told the story of the Easter Rising and Ireland’s War of Independence.

At its award ceremony held on 14th February the Academy also announced that the IFTAs Feature Documentary category is to be named the George Morrison Feature Documentary award in his honour.
