07 December 2007: Arts Council makes awards to 78 small festivals and events

The Arts Council has announced details of successful recipients under round one of the Small Festivals Scheme for 2008. A total of €499,980 has been awarded to 78 festivals and events throughout the country from 135 applications received.   The total value of the funding sought by the 135 applicants was €1,685,192.

The Small Festivals Scheme is aimed, in the main, at locally-based events and festivals seeking Arts Council funding of up to ¤20,000. The awards offered may be used for one-off events or for a programme of festival activities. Of the 78 funded, 20 are first time applicants to the scheme. The average grant awarded to successful applicants in this round was €6,410. Most artforms were represented in the scheme and there was a high level of interest from multi-disciplinary festivals and music as well as an increased number of applicants from the traditional arts.

Speaking today, Úna McCarthy, Head of Festivals said: ‘I am delighted with the ongoing enthusiasm demonstrated by communities throughout the country to present and promote the arts. It is so encouraging to see the vision and ambition across art forms and the growing confidence that these groups have in putting these festivals together’.

The Arts Council’s Small Festivals scheme has a second round of offers for 2008 - (for festivals happening in the second part of this year) and the closing date for receipt of applications is Friday 29 February 2008.
