08 August 2008: Arts Council Chair congratulates Druid Theatre Company and playwright Enda Walsh

The Arts Council today offered its congratulations to the Druid Theatre Company and playwright Enda Walsh for winning the Scotsman Fringe First award for the second successive year at the Edinburgh festival with The New Electric Ballroom.

Arts Council Chair, Olive Braiden, said she was delighted with the news.

"I’m thrilled with this wonderful success two years in a row. Druid and Enda Walsh are national treasures. We are especially proud that this world-class play stars a member of the Arts Council, Rosaleen Linehan," Ms Braiden said. "The Arts Council is very proud of its role as Druid’s main funder."

The Arts Council provided funding of €857,540 to Druid Theatre Company for 2008, and has allocated €920,540 in funding for 2009. The performance of The New Electric Ballroom at the Edinburgh Festival is supported by Culture Ireland, the government agency for promoting Irish arts abroad.

Mary Cloake, Director of the Arts Council, paid tribute to the work of Enda Walsh and Druid. "The success of The New Electric Ballroom demonstrates once more that Ireland maintains the highest level of international standards in theatre writing, production and performance."
