19 April 2007: Arts Council announces second group of organisations to participate in the touring experiment

The Arts Council is pleased to announce the second group of organisations to participate in The Touring Experiment. The Touring Experiment is an initiative of the Arts Council - a two year action research project designed to inform and shape future policy for touring in the Republic of Ireland.

Under this round, following submission of over 70 Expressions of Interest, thirty nine detailed proposals seeking a total of c. €3m were considered. The Arts Council decisions mean that over €1.2m has now been offered to a further twenty-six companies and individual artists in six art forms. This brings the total allocated to date to over €1.8m. Details of the application process for Round 3 will be announced later this month.

The Touring Experiment was created by the Arts Council in order to facilitate and develop consistency in touring high quality artistic work. Integral to the Experiment is a research project to consider the challenges and analyse feedback from artists and audiences, venues and producers. The Arts Council will consider a new policy on touring next year informed by the outcome of the research project.

Mary Cloake, Director of the Arts Council, said: "The second round of the Touring Experiment has broadened to include six art forms: Music, Visual Arts, Literature, Traditional Arts, Dance and Theatre. Our belief in the value of this experiment is endorsed by the high level of interest, and the quality of proposals. The Touring Experiment was designed to support a cross section of touring initiatives and these twenty six projects will offer a good range of work across the six art-forms. They include work by individuals and ensembles, exhibitions, tours focusing on the artistic process, work led by venues or producers or both, established practitioners and less well-known artists, and activity across a range of scales.

We are confident that the Touring Experiment will assist the Arts Council in creating a policy for touring that is sustainable and will offer Irish audiences a secure future of quality and exciting artistic engagement."

The Touring Experiment is an initiative operated on behalf of the Arts Council by Temple Bar Cultural Trust, in conjunction with the Irish Theatre Institute.

Ends.
