The Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland have launched a significant new initiative that aims to promote the visibility of artists from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, encourage greater cross-border mobility and provide an opportunity to work closely with an invited curator.
The Curated Visual Arts Award which is valued at €56k is designed to enable the selected artists to produce pivotal work that will advance their own practice.
In partnership with the Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin and Void, Derry, the two Councils have invited the artist, Mike Nelson, to firstly determine a shortlist of artists and subsequently select two artists who will show new work in both the Douglas Hyde and Void in late 2007 and early 2008.
Mike Nelson will provide support to the selected artists throughout the creative and exhibition processes. He has underlined the value of the award in enabling the artists to produce work at a critical time for them that will significantly advance their own practice and make a notable public contribution to contemporary art practice. The call for submissions proposes that artists consider the qualities of each of the galleries and respond accordingly considering everything from the obvious to the obscure.
The submission deadline is March 30th and the selected artists will be announced in May 2007.
