17 December 2006: Arts Council announces initial Revenue funding decisions

The Arts Council, the Irish Government agency for developing the arts, is pleased to announce grant decisions in a number of areas under its revenue funding programme for 2007. Revenue funding is the Council’s main grants programme for arts organisations.

This year, after finalising its budget for 2007, the Arts Council took decisions earlier than originally envisaged in a number of artform areas: circus, opera and the traditional arts. Decisions were also made in respect of applications received from local authorities. As originally announced, all remaining decisions under revenue funding are expected to be made in mid January 2007 and applicants will be informed of the outcome shortly afterwards.

Olive Braiden, Chair of the Arts Council said, "Taking decisions a little earlier in a number of key areas will help these organisations as they plan their activities for 2007. From a policy perspective, circus, opera and the traditional arts represent current priority areas for the Arts Council and this is reflected in the significant increases in levels of funding support that has been offered through revenue funding."

Of the total of 401 applications received prior to the deadline of 20 October 2006, the Arts Council has offered funding to 23 arts organisations, 34 local authorities and Ealaíon na Gaeltachta. The total value of the funding offered to date is almost €10m.

Funding offered to organisations in circus totalled €230,000, an increase of €100,000 on last year, opera organisations have been offered €3.78m, an increase of €660,000 on last year, traditional arts organisations have been offered €1.87m, an increase of €697,500 on last year. This €1.87m forms part of an overall programme of spending amounting to €4m, in the second of a three year development programme for the traditional arts. Local authorities have been offered €3,374,000, an increase of €451,900 on last year, with specific support for children and young people.
