18 December 2006: Arts Council Releases Sounds New Review of Supports to Contemporary Music in Ireland

The Arts Council is pleased to announce the publication of Sounds New - Review of Supports to Contemporary Music in Ireland, which is based on research commissioned by The Arts Council and undertaken by UK consultants, Graham Devlin and Associates, in 2005.

Sounds New outlines existing supports to contemporary music in Ireland, presenting findings from a survey of composers, performers and organisations active in contemporary music and international examples of contemporary music supports, as well as setting out a broad range of strategic areas for future development.

Speaking on the publication of Sounds New - Arts Council Chair, Olive Braiden, commented: "This review is a high water mark in the development of contemporary music in Ireland. The Arts Council's acknowledgment of the need to develop this area through the commissioning of this review is a very positive step."

Arts Council music specialist, Fergus Sheil said, "I warmly welcome this report on the contemporary music sector. The publication of Sounds New is an important milestone in the development of contemporary music in Ireland. The report gives us a clear picture of achievements to date and the challenges ahead. It offers the Council an opportunity to take strategically important and developmental steps in the months and years ahead".

The Arts Council has for many years played an important role in new music through commissions, bursaries and a range of awards to individual artists. It has also funded a number of performing and support organisations, as well as promoters and local authorities.

Sounds New is published in two documents. The primary document offers a summary of research findings, international comparisons and areas for strategic development. A longer, background document is available to download from the Arts Council's library.
