The Arts Council announced today that it has awarded €1,060,992 in Open Call funding to four organisations for major, once-off projects. The award was open to artists and organisations who are resident in the state, and where the final outcome will be to the benefit of those living in Ireland.
Speaking about the Open Call projects, Maureen Kennelly, Director of the Arts Council said:
“This year the Open Call projects and programmes demonstrate brave and ambitious new works which support the development of the performing arts. Four new reflective, thought provoking premieres will take place in 2022 & 2023 in dance, theatre and spectacle providing opportunities for the public to engage in the arts in innovative ways. The works will also support a number of artists to experiment and develop their practice and support three Irish arts organisations to build their international partnerships. We are delighted to be able to support these ambitious programmes which will take place across the country over the next two years; making both an impact and leaving a sustainable legacy with the public. “

THE WITCH PROJECT/POWERFUL TROUBLE
Junk Ensemble

Junk Ensemble will create a large-scale project about 'the witch', collaborating with a team of internationally acclaimed female Irish artists. Powerful Trouble is an ambitious, highly visual live production to be performed at RHA Gallery as part of Dublin Theatre Festival. The production is an exploration and defence of ‘the witch’, pointing to the misogyny and cruel history of the witch and reclaiming the word in contemporary society. For our creative engagement programme we will work with groups to develop the programme at a local level.
OILEÁN NA NAOMH – SAINT’S ISLAND (WORKING TITLE)
Teaċ Daṁsa

Teaċ Daṁsa will create a beautiful and affecting large-scale, dance, music, theatre and filmic work, with a working title, Oileán Na Naomh – Saint’s Island that will be made in response to Max Richter’s acclaimed score, ‘Recomposed - Vivaldi’s Four Seasons’ Teaċ Daṁsa will partner with the Irish Chamber Orchestra, Dublin Theatre Festival and Sadler’s Wells London and a company of thirteen international dancers

To mark the centenary of the publication of James Joyce's Ulysses, three of Ireland’s most innovative arts organisations - MoLI, ANU and Landmark Productions – and hundreds of Irish artists and arts workers, have joined together to present Ulysses 2.2, a year-long, nationwide odyssey of creative responses to the 18 episodes that chronicle an ordinary day in the life of Leopold Bloom. These brave, bold artistic experiments will be undertaken by 18 multi-disciplinary artists and collectives, who will venture beyond their creative comfort zone to uncover stories of modern Ireland, framed and inspired by the 18 episodes of the book.
LIFELINE
Galway Community Circus

On 16th July 2022, a cast of 150 people from all walks of life will perform Europe’s largest highwire spectacle over the River Corrib in the heart of Galway City. LifeLine will draw on the transformative power of circus arts to deliver wellbeing impact and provoke discourse on mental health across the island of Ireland. People of all ages, backgrounds and nationalities will learn the dynamic art of highwire walking before joining artists and participants from across Europe to perform a stunning display of hope, strength and resilience over one of Ireland’s most iconic waterways.
