The Arts Council has announced details of the successful recipients from the first round of applications for the Council’s Festival Investment Scheme for 2021.
The Council recognises the distinctive role arts festivals play in sustaining a vibrant and sustainable arts profile at a local level. Festivals provide opportunities for artists and audiences to experience new work and ways of making work. The Council acknowledges the valuable contribution made by voluntary committees in developing these festivals.
A total of €886,540 has been awarded to 62 festivals spread across 19 counties. We received 73 eligible applications. The total value of the funding sought by the 73 applications was €1,135,503. Of the 73 applications received, 14 are first time applicants to the scheme and of these 7 received funding.
Speaking about the awards, Arts Council Head of Festivals, Karl Wallace, said “We are delighted to be able to increase our investment in small festivals for 2021. Festivals play a pivotal role in the dissemination of arts across the country ensuring critical opportunities for public engagement. In such challenging times, increasing our funding to the festivals sector will support them to deliver their programmes and provide opportunities to further build their capacity in 2021 and beyond.”
The purpose of the Festivals Investment Scheme (FIS) is to provide festivals with the appropriate supports to deliver quality arts experiences for audiences, to contribute to the development of artform practices, to creatively and imaginatively engage audiences, and to increase opportunities for public engagement. Festivals are key producers and presenters of the arts, and are critical for engaging large and diverse audiences and broadening public access to the arts.
Small festivals in 2020 faced a particularly challenging set of circumstances managing their festival planning and activities though changing public health measures this year; festivals responded creatively by recalibrating and repurposing their programmes to ensure that audiences could still engage in the arts in innovative and accessible ways. This was achieved through digital activities and touring and portable artworks.
Festivals have shown an imaginative commitment to both their artists and audiences during the pandemic and the increased investment for 2021 in small festivals is offered to ensure the work of festivals can continue and strengthen and further engage with the public.
Successful applicants under Festival Investment Scheme include:
Baltimore Fiddle Fair
Baltimore Fiddle Fair was established in 1992 and is a highly respected and quality driven traditional arts event. This annual festival is centred on the fiddle as an instrument which is used widely in Irish traditional music coupled with the international dimension of contributions from invited players of other traditions, e.g. the USA, Scandinavia - whose music can be contrasted and compared with the Irish tradition and the musical links between the two examined. It takes place in the West Cork town of Baltimore and as well as concerts there are also workshops, master-classes and links with local schools. The Fiddle Fair also hosts events amongst the local island community (Sherkin, Cape Clear) during the long weekend and has embarked on events at different times of the year.
Great Music in Irish Houses
Great Music in Irish Houses presents a range of concerts in the greater Dublin area over several days in June each year. The festival mixes stellar international artists, a developmental programme for emerging young Irish artists and a curated 'Saunter' series of 'journey' concerts over a single day. The festival continues to present high-quality Irish and international artists in generally intimate, architecturally/culturally interesting spaces.
Cairde Sligo Arts Festival
Cairde Sligo Arts Festival is a multi-disciplinary arts festival set amidst the stunning backdrop of the Wild Atlantic Way that takes place in Sligo in July each year. The festival has an ethos and programme of inclusivity; reflecting the rich diversity of communities living and working in the Sligo area.
Hearsay Audio Festival
Hearsay Audio Festival is a biennial festival that takes place in the village of Kilfinane in County Limerick. The festival dedicates itself to the production and transmission of audio arts and is the only festival of its kind in Ireland.
